My "Record" of Record in Lesson 2 was too long to post, but I did post it on the Foundations facebook page in discussions if you want to see the whole article. I do want to share a paragraph from that record because I feel it is relevant to the Notebook approach, which encompasses handwriting, spelling, reading and yes, mathematics - precision, constancy, order, self-government.

Arise From Your Sleep

"Why do secular methodologies of teaching fail the student? Because fill in the blank, multiple choice questions do not discipline the student to contend with the Word of God (Isaiah 43). They are not compelled to think in complete sentences and whole thoughts, nor are they persuaded to think deeply and settle their own convictions upon His Truth. To forsake the writing process is to strip from our children their deepest comfort and their greatest inheritance. It leaves them impotent to stand against the wiles of the devil; it ties their tongues and binds their hands in the bondage of inarticulation. The current generation is deeply troubled because of their inability to coherently express the depth of the darkness that lies within them, for they have been shielded from the light of the Truth; the parents indulging their slothful nature. This indulgence is the candy that rots the tooth at the root. the following exceprt from John Locke details the dangers of indulging ouir children and the damage of so doing..."

Danika, Thank you so much for this comment (and all your others as well!) I am only slowly unveiling the Principle Approach within my own mind. I plan to begin with my children at the beginning of our next school year after our summer(Feb 2010). I am seeing so clearly the fruit of the "canned curriculum," though Christian. It bears all these marks of inbreeding slothfulness which then disturbs every aspect of homelife.

Awesome...Alex is from Australia! Be certain when you study history to study God's hand in Australian history. His story of Australia--according to His purpose.
